Places to Visit
Kollam has been an important trading port since ancient times. Traders from Arabia, China, Rome, and other regions visited Kollam. The famous traveler Ibn Battuta mentioned Kollam as one of the major Indian ports during his travels. Today, Kollam celebrates its culture through the annual Kollam Fest held at Ashramam Maidan.
Tourist Spots
Varkala Cliff – The only cliff formation in southern Kerala next to the Arabian Sea. Visitors enjoy beautiful sea views, restaurants, shops, and sunset scenes.
Jatayu Earth Center – A nature park located about 38 km from Kollam. It features the world’s largest bird sculpture of the mythological character Jatayu.
Thenmala Eco-Tourism – India’s first planned eco-tourism destination. Activities include boating, trekking, biking, and visiting the nearby Palaruvi Waterfalls.
Kollam Beach – Also called Mahatma Gandhi Beach, known for scenic views and the nearby Mahatma Gandhi Park.
Kottarakkara Sree Mahaganapathi Temple – A famous and ancient Ganapathi temple located about 25 km from Kollam.
Tangasseri Lighthouse – A 144-foot lighthouse near a scenic beach with remains of Portuguese and Dutch forts.
